Bariatric Surgery
Three of our surgeons offer laparoscopic gastric bypass or lap banding to carefully screened and selected patients.
They are evaluated and followed postoperatively in two Bariatric Centers staffed by a specially trained team of nurses, psychologists and internal medicine/family practice physicians.
What Is Bariatric Surgery?
Presently, there are eight accepted types of bariatric surgical procedures performed in hi-tech hospitals in the United States. The type of bariatric surgery procedure to be adopted hinges upon the individual's medical history and current medical condition. The bariatric surgeon considers the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure and determines the which one is most apporpriate for you.
When you decide to have a Bariatric surgery you will be informed of the entire process. This includes pre-surgery, the actual procedure, and post-op. Some people may think that once the surgery is done, that there is nothing further they need to do. The surgeon along with specially trained nurses and psychologists will stress the importance of committing to more than just the surgery. The operation alone does not lead to successful weight-loss. It is a significant tool that needs to be accompanied by changes in diet and exercise to fully work.
For a couple of days you'll be on a liquid diet and after that you'll progress through pureed and soft foods for a couple of months before you begin eating normal food. This is to acclimate your body to digesting food through your smaller stomach.
Fruits and vegtables may not be your favorite foods, but they need to become a large part of your new diet plan since they carry tons of nutrients your body needs.
